In its 13th year Columbus Dance Theatre will continue its ongoing collaboration with the Carpe Diem String Quartet, a beautiful marriage of movement and music, with multiple performances joining the Company and the Quartet together in CDT’s Fisher Theatre.  “It is such a joy to work with these outstanding musicians,” says CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach.  “The presence of the Quartet has transformed our very identity as a Company and has brought such dynamism to our Season.  Except for our annual holiday ballet, Matchgirl, we now have live music for all performances give by the Company.”

The CDT Season opens with The String Machine, first premiered at WOSU-TV in 2007 with choreography by Tim Veach.  “CDT has performed this work on tour to various venues throughout the Midwest since its creation in 2007,” says Veach.  “But, this will be the first time that the work will be presented in its entirety in Columbus since 2007.”  The String Machine is a collaborative work with Carpe Diem and scenic designer David Jon Krohn whose set contains a series of retractable chords attached to the dancers.  This evening length work confronts issues of how we work with and are controlled by technology as the dancers become part of “the machine,” testing the limits of their humanity.   Musical selections played by the quartet include the works of Shostakovich, Glass, Beethoven, Piazzolla, Frank Bennett, and Korine Fujiwara.  This work will open the Season at CDT’s Fisher Theatre on Friday, September 17th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 18th at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.  Individual tickets are:  $28 for Adults and $12 for Students. The Company and Quartet will also perform this work on a tour and residency to Towson University in Maryland in October of 2010.

Columbus Dance Theatre’s beloved holiday classic Matchgirl returns for the eleventh year - a highlight of the Columbus holiday Season.  This timeless tale written by Hans Christian Andersen was created as CDT’s annual family ballet more than a decade ago by CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach.  It continues to move Columbus audiences with its poignant message of forgiveness and hope.  “I look forward to it each year,” says Veach.  “We bring our wonderful professional training school and the Company together each year for this annual tradition.  It is such a joy to see the children dancing along with the Company in a ballet that confronts our human frailties and embraces a message of tolerance.”  CDT will partner with Second Harvest Food Banks of Ohio as part of the production. CDT will accept non-perishable food at all performances to be donated to the Food Bank. As well, CDT will donate 300 tickets to the performance to Second Harvest to be distributed to their clients and constituents.  “The ballet deals with hunger.  We wanted to offer both physical and artistic nourishment to those less fortunate as an extension of the dominant message of the ballet; one of caring for those less fortunate.”   Performances will be held at Otterbein College’s Fritsche Theatre on Friday, December 3rd at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 4th at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.  Individual tickets are:  $28 for adults and $12 for students.

Ten Cents a Dance returns to warm the winter months for a one night only, show stopping, benefit performance for CDT.  Featuring Chicago cabaret entertainer Kathryn Payne this evening of ballad and cabaret classics is a perfect Valentine’s weekend treat.  Ten Cents is now an annual benefit production for us,” says Veach.  “Our patrons look forward to it each year.  We transform the facility into a dinner theatre. The audience gets to indulge in great food, fantastic piano arrangements and beautiful singing by Ms. Payne, and elegant dances performed by the Company.”  The evening includes dinner, the performance, and dancing all for $50.  New selections are prepared by Ms. Payne each Season for this one of kind CDT experience.  The performance will be held at CDT’s Fisher Theatre on Saturday February 12th at 8:00 p.m.

Courage, a new evening length work by Tim Veach will highlight the month of March.  This collaborative, multi-media work will feature an original score for string quartet by Carpe Diem member Korine Fujiwara.  The work confronts what it means to be courageous in the face of fear, injustice, and the unknown.  “I am interested in how fear creates a world where injustice can be made manifest,” says Veach.  “We are all trying to ‘stand up for what we believe in’ but do we know if what we believe in is the truth?  Do we have the courage to open our view to that which threatens us, to those who don’t feel the way we feel about politics, race, gender, social justice and simply living together?  I am fascinated by the current strident political landscape which is imbued with fear.  I am seeking to ask these questions and address what it means to be courageous in the face of injustice.”  The dance will be made in consort with composer Korine Fujiwara, “Each and every collaboration with Tim and the dancers of Columbus Dance Theatre has been an inspiring artistic experience for me, both as a composer and as a performer.  Tim's choreography is profoundly musical and visually stunning, and I am always eager to observe his interpretation of my musical compositions.  This will be the fifth collaboration between us - my music, his choreography.  Our artistic partnership continues to blossom with new risks and challenges,” says Fujiwara.  Courage will be presented at CDT’s Fisher Theatre on Friday, March 4th at 8:00 and Saturday, March 5th at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.

The Company Season concludes with New Dance Project in May.  This concert features new original work by local and nationally recognized choreographers.  Carpe Diem String Quartet will provide live musical accompaniment for this evening of premieres.  Choreographers for New Dance Project include:  Melinda Baker, Shelby Bakies, Todd VanSlambrouck, Stella Kane, and Tim Veach among others.  This much anticipated concert highlights a CDT strength, the creation of new contemporary dance.  “We have always been committed to the presentation of new work. This program offers a broad range of choreographic expression and pushes our Company with a wide range of movement styles,” says Veach.  Dozens of new contemporary dances have been created for the Company since the inception of this program six years ago. Performances are held at CDT’s Fisher Theatre on Friday May 20th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 21st at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.  Single Tickets are $28 for Adults and $12 for Students.

An exciting highlight to next year’s Season will be the creation of the Columbus Dances Fellowship Concert.  CDT, in partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council, will host an annual concert of dances chosen from the local dance community with funding provided by GCAC.  Five fellowships of $2000 each will be awarded to choreographers through an adjudication process in the fall of 2010.  The five dances chosen will then be presented on a concert free to the public on Friday, April 15th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 16th at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. at CDT’s Fisher Theatre  "Our new partnership with CDT to present the Columbus Dances Fellowship is exciting, because it gives our local dance artists a chance to showcase their work and recognizes them for their important contributions to the cultural landscape,” says Milt Baughman, President of the Greater Columbus Arts Council.  Choreographers interested in applying for Fellowship consideration should contact CDT at (614) 849-0227.
