Columbus Dance Theatre announces its

Tenth Anniversary Season

 

Columbus Dance Theatre, a contemporary ballet company located in Columbus, Ohio announces its diamond anniversary season.  CDT with its professional company, downtown theatre space, and professional training school continues to serve as a producer of outstanding, adventurous repertoire and dance leader in Columbus.  Led by Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Tim Veach, the Company will embark on an ambitious and dynamic season of premieres and collaborations.  Season highlights include: two made for television programs at the new WOSU-Television studios at COSI Columbus, multiple company presentations of new work including premieres by Kennet Oberly, Stella Kane, Tim Veach, and Kristina Isabelle, extensive touring engagements, and a culminating retrospective concert that surveys the fruitful ten year history of Columbus Dance Theatre.   “This season is a real milestone for us and the dance community in Columbus,” says Veach.  “With our multiple collaborations with WOSU, Carpe Diem String Quartet, outside choreographers and the return of former CDT dancers for our end of season 10th anniversary concert, this tenth year of CDT will certainly be one of our most ambitious and exciting.  That this Company has thrived into its tenth year is an important moment for us and for dance in this city.”  As well as performing in Columbus, CDT will embark on multiple touring engagements with performances in Florida and the upper mid-west.   • The Season begins with a new evening length premiere by Tim Veach at the new WOSU television studios at COSI Columbus.  With live music provided by Carpe Diem String Quartet CDT will present The String Machine.  Contemporary music is transformed into the string quartet form while CDT dancers become a kinetic machine of movement.   Audience members will be part of a live studio audience and get to experience both this exciting new dance and the experience the excitement of seeing the creation of a dance made for television.

            Performances:  November 2nd at 8:00 p.m. and November 3rd at 3:00 p.m.

      Tickets:  $25 for Adults and $10 for Students

 

 The String Machine

 

The season continues with Kennet Oberly’s evening length work, Goldberg Variations to be presented at CDT’s Fisher Theatre, 592 E. Main St. in Columbus.  In collaboration with visual artist, Kyra Kopestonsky the music of Bach pulsates propelling both dancer and artist forward in a panoramic work that bridges the gap between performing and visual art.  Larissa Sintsova serves as featured soloist in this visually enticing work. 

     Performances:  November 16th and 17th at 8:00 and November 18th at 3:00 p.m.  Tickets:  $20 for Adults and $10 for Students

  • CDT will present the eighth anniversary performance of its annual ballet Matchgirl at the Fritsche Theatre at Otterbein College’s Cowan Hall in Westerville. This ballet has become a staple of the holiday performance season in Columbus and brings together some 40 children from the school of Columbus Dance Theatre in a ballet of poignancy and beauty.  With Choreography by Tim Veach and music by Aaron Copeland and John Rutter this ballet serves as both a family entertainment and a work that challenges our need for social justice in our time.

           Performances:  November 30th at 8:00 p.m. and December 1st at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. Tickets:  $22 for Adults and $10 for Students

 

          Matchgirl

 

  • February will bring the return of a perennial favorite, Ten Cents a Dance.  Featuring celebrated cabaret entertainer Kathryn Payne, this evening of cabaret standards and elegant dance will find a new home as part of the CDT/WOSU series of performances for public television.  The WOSU studios at COSI will be transformed into a cabaret complete with dining, drinks and heartwarming dance.  This perfect Valentines treat will sweep audiences away with joy, bittersweet romance, and endless style.  The Friday performance includes dinner and a cash bar.  You and your date will be a part of the romance as the filming of this feature will include our audience as dancers turn, spin and fall in love all within an arm’s reach.

      Performances:  February 15th at 8:00 (Tickets $50 and include dinner with cash bar)

  • CDT’s New Dance Project returns in March of 2008.  Cutting edge, new dance is the hallmark of this program described last season as a “must see” event in Columbus Alive.  This program is contemporary ballet at its best – daring, fresh, new.  Well known CDT choreographers Kennet Oberly, Kristina Isabelle and Tim Veach will be joined by choreographer Stella Kane, pushing the limits of our dancers and movement.  Columbus Symphony Orchestra concert master Charles Wetherbee will join the action playing the violin and moving through space with CDT Artistic Director at his side in a premiere for dancer and musician choreographed by Mr. Veach.  Performances will be held at CDT’s Fisher Theatre, 592 E. Main St. in Columbus.

      Performances:  April 4th at 8:00 April 5th at 3:00 and 8:00

      Tickets:  $20 for Adults and $10 for Students

  • The Company Season culminates in performances by current and former Company members in the Columbus Dance Theatre Tenth Anniversary Concert.  This program features dances chosen from past seasons as well as an exciting premiere that will feature some 30 dancers from the CDT past and the current season.  Carpe Diem String Quartet will provide live music for the production and will be joined by pianist Casey Cook-Westfall.  This celebration concert includes dances performed to the music of Schubert, Debussy, Beehthoven, Chopin, Bach, Shostakovich, and Philip Glass.  “I believe that one of the distinguishing characteristics of the past ten years for us is the consistent use of outstanding musical repertoire,” says CDT’s Tim Veach.  “We take great and substantial music and apply contemporary visions of movement to these beautiful soundscapes.”   These performances are held at CDT’s Fisher Theatre, 592 E. Main St. in Columbus.

As an addition to the Company Season, CDT will produce multiple concerts featuring performers from the Columbus Dance Community as part of its Community Series of concerts.

 

  • CDT will produce Columbus Dances VI and Columbus Dances VII.  This concert is presented by The Columbus Movement Movement (CM2) and features exciting contemporary choreography by local artists.  This ongoing series of performances is now a staple of the Columbus Dance Season and brought CM2 national attention as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” last year.

     Performances:  Columbus Dances VI October 26th and 27th at 8:00 p.m. and  October 28th at 2:00 p.m. 

     Columbus Dances VII, March 28th and 29th at 8:00 p.m. and March 30th at 2:00 p.m.

  • Dancing Alone, featured on WOSU-Televsion’s Artzine series last season returns to the CDT Community Series.  CDT will produce an evening of solo works by regional dance artists.  This captivating concert won critical acclaim last season and is sure intrigue an audience looking for cutting edge, highly personal work.

    Performances:  April 18th and 19th at 8:00 p.m. and April 20th at 3:00 p.m.
